It all started with a refrigerator: Actually, the chemist Roy Plunkett wanted to invent a better refrigerator. The young chemist experimented with the gas tetrafluoroethylene, pressurised a canister with it and froze it. The next morning he wanted to continue his research, but the gas was gone. Instead, after a chemical reaction, the canister suddenly contained a whitish powder: polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE for short, now better known under the trade name Teflon.
